This is No Time to be Silly – or Is It?

I was watching the NBA playoff game yesterday between the Cavaliers and the Hawks and after a player tried some complicated move, the announcer said, “This is no time to be silly . . .” in regards to the players and they way they were playing. So we yelled out at the TV, “Yeah!! Take off those wild wigs, crazy glasses, and weird costumes!” Of course they weren’t wearing any such thing, but that’s what “silly” meant to me in that moment. And that got me thinking . . .

Okay so if an NBA playoff game isn’t the time to be silly, it begs the question . . . when is it time to be silly? Okay, I get it. It’s probably not good to be silly at a job interview, in court, at a funeral (unless it’s mine, then go wild with the silliness), or at your wedding.

But if there are so many situations where “it’s no time to be silly” then there must be times where it’s totally right to be silly. Times where the wild wigs, crazy glasses, and weird costumes are just the ticket.

As a spectator at a sporting event, silliness is always a good thing and totally appropriate. Bright colorful wigs – the more outlandish the better. Bizarre glasses and ridiculous outfits. The more the better as far as the sports fan is concerned.

After someone’s had a rough day or week and just needs a laugh, walk in the house dressed wild and you’re sure to bring a smile.

At the grocery store, the library, the video store, the bank – all those great errand-running type places.

At any and all parties be it a birthday party, an anniversary party, a theme party . . . Parties just scream for silliness.

When you have a way-serious project – like doing your taxes or writing a novel – adding some silliness keeps everything in perspective. Next time you have a big test, show up in class wearing a happy costume wig and see what wonders it can work for you.

When going to the airport to pick up a friend or relative, dressing silly is sure to be appreciated by all. First, all the other airport hostages will love you for adding a bit of smiles to an otherwise serious environment. Secondly, your guests will pick you out of the crowd with one glance.

So while there may indeed be places where silliness may not fully appreciated or desired, that only means there are a multitude of other situations where silliness is exactly what is needed. So look around, see your world a bit differently, and look for places and times where silliness is a good fit. There are tons more than you’d think.
