Teen Saves Cannon from Bad Landing

February 22nd, 2010

A few weeks ago in Buda, Texas, Cary Clevenger was living the life of a regular teen.  Hanging out at his friend Gavin’s place, he had no idea his identity was about to change.  Suddenly, the eighth grader recognized his full potential by catching a dropping Cannon.   That’s Cannon Jamison – Gavin’s two year old brother.

Imagine the super strength of a teen who catches a Cannon – er, toddler from a two storey window?

The toddler apparently called down from the window, grabbing Cary’s attention as he pushed on the screen with his face and hands.  Seconds later he was tumbling out. Cannon hit a light fixture attached to the wall and landed in Cary’s waiting arms.  The two fell to the driveway, landing unhurt if not a little frazzled.

Talk about drama.  Cary will be able to milk this for years.

Okay, we’re thrilled that little Cannon is okay.  Christie Jamison, the boy’s mother, has since installed a lock on the second storey window so that it opens only five or six inches.  The other question is – what will she do about her little flying Cannon?  Was he trying to live up to his (super cool) name?  This boy is a Superman in the making, trying to leap out of tall buildings.  Someone please tell him that he’s supposed to leap OVER the buildings.

The fourteen-year-old boy, with quick thinking and Mr. Fantastic-like reflexes, is modest as he talks about his life saving feat.  But we know the truth – he’s a real hero.

As for little Cannon and his family, they’re grateful.  And they’re also using the media attention to raise awareness about window/toddler safety.  Ms. Jamison is hoping that others will take the story to heart and install safety features.

Cary?  He’s hoping the glow of being a hero will stay until he enters high school – girls are going to love it.

Catch the Buzz of Wonderland with your own Tea Party

February 19th, 2010

The odd but fabulous style of Tim Burton is sure to create an Alice in Wonderland film like never before.  Opening in theatres on March 5th and starring the sultry Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, this is one for people of all ages to flock to.  “Watch Me” are the front and center instructions for this movie.

A classic story is brought to life again – but this time the animations are intertwined with vivacious real life actors and incredible sets.  It’s a stunning feast for the eye.  But the absolute best aspect of this film are the costumes – incredible and almost unbelievable, they turn a children’s story into a fantasy world for everyone.

The whole thing screams for a first class costume party.  How can you not want to indulge the adventurer deep within yourself by diving into Alice’s story?

Start with the invites – crisp, white paper with simple black letters.  “You’ve got a very important date” will entice the party goers and get them in the mood for the madness of an afternoon tea party with the Hatter, Dormouse and White Rabbit.  Don’t shy away from inviting the nastiest woman you know, just be sure she’s dressed as the Queen of Hearts and brings along sufficient henchmen to do her bidding.  Better yet, if the innocence of Alice is not your cup of tea go as the power hungry Queen yourself.

Set up the nibblies, including the fanciest of tea sets and plenty of sweeties.  No Unbirthday is complete without sugar, sugar and more sugar.  Feel free to sip something other than tea from your cups, but keep it authentic with saucers for every guest.

Everyone from the kids to the adults can get into this movie’s release.  Check out the costumes available now, print the invites and pull out the tea set.  Go down the rabbit-hole together and hold the party to remember for all time.

AVATAR: Become a Na’vi with a Bit of Makeup Magic

February 18th, 2010

James Cameron’s newest epic is rocketing across the movie world and it’s only a matter of time before the Na’vi become more recognizable than Wookies.  Try on a little makeup for the next costume party and transform yourself into a character from the hot new movie.

Start with some plastic or rubber ears – look for something elfish (think Lord of the Rings but painted bright blue).  You’ll need appliance putty or spirit gum to stick them on your head.  Use acrylic paint in solid blue with lighter blue stripes to make the ears look authentic.  Wash your face and hair well before applying the disguise.

Look for contacts that will lend you a cat-eye look, perfect for the Na’vi.  Then cover the skin on your face and neck with a thin layer of blue cream-based makeup.  Get good coverage and recoat until you’re entirely happy with how it’s turned out.  Mix a little white into some blue for highlights, thin stripes or swirls around your temples and radiated across the rest of your face and body.

For the allusion of a cat-nose that all good Na’vi have, work with the lightened blue makeup and draw a defined line from the inside corners of your eyes to the outside points of your nose or nostril, widening the look of any nose.  Blend it in a little for a more natural effect.  Also run a line down the bridge of the nose and blend.  You can also add makeup to the seam between the ears and the face, but not too heavy.

Use more lightened blue to create stripes or swirls wherever appropriate and add the character’s hair with a wig or beads.  If you can get your hands on a blue lycra body suit your whole outfit will be sublime, but if not opt for something blue and tight fitting.

You’ve cornered the market on Avatar makeup with this get up and it’s sure to impress even the pickiest sci-fi fans.  Just watch out for greedy, military-type humans and moon-shattering battles.

Cameron has also just announced that he’ll be penning a new book – yes – AVATAR!  “There are things you can do in books that you can’t do with films,” Cameron explained.  “The producer also hinted that the story of Pandora and its blue-skinned people will also have a sequel – or sequels, plural.”

How it Ended

November 2nd, 2009

pirate-in-blackThe Costume Craziness that is Halloween has come to an end along with our fabulous Costume Countdown. It got supremely hectic down at Scavenge in those last few days. The staff was in costume, half of our customers were in costume, and something happened for the first time ever.straight-jacket costume

On Halloween day, we had everything in store on sale for HALF OFF! It wasn’t planned! It just happened and those who wandered in were lucky enough to get some amazing deals!

At times the store was just bursting at the seams with people. Some people amazed me by actually being amazed themsleves that we actually sold out of many items. Please tell me why it is that sooooo many people wait until the very last minute to get their costumes?

In the end, it was all good. This fricken recession we are “enjoying” didn’t stop people from dressing up and having some fun. Sure it made some be more creative, or recycle costume pieces, but that’s okay. It’s all about having some fun, laughing, smiling, and enjoying ourselves despite all the economic crap going on. And costumes are exactly the way to do it.

They get us outside of ourselves. They let us dream and play and separate ourselves from our daily life and worries – even if just for a little bit. So don’t throw away those costumes – whether they be for infants, kids, teens, adults or your pets. Who knows when you or someone else might want or need them. Pack them away for your next theme party or for next Halloween. Who knows where the economy will be then.

Costume Countdown Day 25: The Halloween Ship is About to Set Sail

October 25th, 2009

Six days before the good ship, Halloween, sets sail.

Erica, our sailor girl, is ready to let you board if you have your costume.

Erica, our sailor girl, is ready to let you board if you have your costume.

Are you ready for the journey? Will you be joining us for trick or treating, costume parties, getting together with friends, meeting new people, or building a special family memories??

Well, here’s one way to gauge your readiness to set sail aboard the Halloween ship. Answer this simple question:

Do you have your costume ready???

So many people wait until the last minute to get their Halloween costumes together. Don’t be one of them this year. Well, maybe it’s a bit late to say this since you’ve only got 5 days left. If you haven’t got your costume ready to go by now, you are dangerously close to being that last minute person I always feel sorry for. Here’s why:

  1. The crowds in the costume shops are ridiculous in the final days. They are all just as bugged, panicked, and frustrated as you are, creating a wonderful store environment. Not to mention no room to move, long lines, and strangers bumping into you.
  2. The costume idea or pieces you need just might be sold out. People are regularly shocked that this happens, but it’s unavoidable.
  3. You have no good answer to your friends and co-workers when the ask what you are going to be this year. A severe blow to your pride.
  4. You risk damaging your relationship with your girlfriend, whom you’ve told over and over that you have a great costume planned.
  5. The risk of settling for some last-minute, lame idea is growing larger with each  passing moment. Get your sheet and scissors ready, you’ll probably end up being a ghost.

So there you have it. Get your costume together and get on board the good ship Halloween before she sets sail in 5 short days.

All aboard!!!

Costume Countdown Day 19: Off to Wonderland

October 19th, 2009

Child's Alice in Wonderland CostumeI have a friend who’s been following this Costume Countdown on Facebook and she generously volunteered her daughters for some photos. Well, I took her right up on that offer just about as quick as she made it. We just started carrying kids’ costumes and we really wanted to see them on some real live kids – instead of just models in photos.

Vivian became Alice for us and we made our first big discovery. Those who made the sizing chart for this costume must think that all kids have been sipping that Wonderland potion that shrinks people or something. By the size chart, Vivian should have fit in a child’s small. When we pulled it out of the package, it was immediately clear that just wasn’t going to happen.

The size chart says that Small fits:

weight: 45 – 64 lbs.; height: 45in – 52in. Chest: 22in.

That was hysterical!!! I think maybe an average sized 3-4 year old might have fit into this, but not a kid that weighed anywhere near 60 pounds.

So, parents, be warned. Buy a size bigger than you think you need in the Children’s Costumes. Once we made that adjustment, all was well in Wonderland for Alice. The costume looked and fit so well she was out there looking for a rabbit hole to jump into.

5 More Great Events for Halloweeners

September 18th, 2009

And now for the exciting part two of Great Events for Halloweeners. At our last installment, you heard about some large and crazy events in the Big Apple, Atlanta, California, Massachusetts , and at a zoo in Kentucky. Here are five more crazy and funtastic  Halloweener events around the country.

6. Fetish and Fantasy Halloween Ball in Las Vegas.  This huge Halloween night event is definitely not for the kiddies. It’s an adults only costume party that has been called one of the top 10 events in the world and one of the 5 events to attend before you die. If you are getting into Vegas early check out the Monster Mayhem and Boca Park Funtime Frightfest that starts on October 9th. Make sure you come in a great costume, because you are the entertainment.

7. Emma Crawford Festival.  For something totally different, head to Coffin RaceManitou Springs, Colorado on October 24th. This annual event commemorates the untimely death of good old Emma, who supposedly haunts the town. There’s even a completely bizarre coffin race where racers push their coffin with “Emma” inside up main street.

8. Sleepy Hollow Legend Weekends.  The Hudson Valley celebrates being the home of the Headless Horseman for two weekends in October. There are a plenty of daytime, nighttime, creepy, scary, and just fun events for the whole family.

9. Markoffs Haunted Forest.  Take on the haunted forest trails in Darnestown, just outside of Washington DC, this October and see if you scare easily. These professional scarers have been freaking people out every Halloween for 17 years and they think they’ll have you jumping in fright too as you take a nighttime stroll through their haunted forest with everything gruesome, unexpected and haunting waiting for you.

10. Dia de los Muertos. Day of the Dead is a big event in many Latino communities, so you can find celebrations in many places throughout the US. Some are held on before Halloween, some the day after (All Saints Day), and some on November 2 (All Souls Day). San Francisco  and Los Angeles  have annual events. Or head to Mexico (I’d recommend going to Oaxaca )where Dia de los Muertos is actually a public holiday. This event is not just another name for Halloween. It’s all about commemorating and honoring the dead . . . but costumes, food, and celebrations are a big part.

5 Great Events for Halloweeners

September 16th, 2009

DRACULAAre you a Halloweener? Sounds bad, but it’s actually a good thing. A Halloweener is a lover of all things Halloween. So for all you Halloweeners out there, here’s a list of five pretty cool Halloween events in the USA.

  1. New York’s Village Halloween Parade.  This is huge event happening on the evening of Halloween itself. It’s now in its 36th year and is said to be the biggest public Halloween event in the USA. Two million attendees, 60,000 costumed marchers, and even national media coverage. Sounds like a perfect place for a Halloweener to me.
  2. Little Five Points Festival and Parade in Atlanta. Join the folks of Atlanta Georgia for their 9th annual parade. They’ve got competition categories and prizes.
  3. West Hollywood Costume Carnaval.  Join a half million other Halloweeners for some west coast Halloween fun. The big event is on Halloween night itself, but they’ve got a whole week’s worth of events leading up to Halloween. Get your costume ready and do Halloween California style
  4. The “World’s Largest Halloween Party” at the Louisville Zoo.  Looking for something a bit more family friendly. This huge event is totally geared toward kids. Both kids and adults can costume up, but they need to be fun, friendly, non-scary costumes. Loads of fun events.
  5. Festival of the Dead. Head to Salem, Massachusetts, the headquarters for all things witchy in America’s early days. There are so many Halloween events here, you might want to stay for a week or longer. How about a Zombie Ball, a Vampire’s Masquerade Ball, or the Witches Ball. Or maybe some Ghost Hunting 101 or pick from one of the many other events perfect for Halloweeners.

Let your little Halloweener brain ponder over those five frightfully fun events. Brainstorm and come up with your perfect Halloween costume. Ah, but don’t book your airline tickets yet. I’ll have five more fantastic Halloweener destinations on the next blog post.

The Coordinated Outfit Travelers

September 14th, 2009

tie dye famHave you ever seen this sort of family? Maybe at an airport, or a theme park, or some other public place? I spent the last few days in airports, subway stations, and even downtown New York City and you just wouldn’t believe how many coordinated families I saw.

They were everywhere – some wearing matching shirts only, others dressed in entire matching outfits. I knew two families who used to do this every time they travelled or took the whole family on outings to crowded public places. They’d dress everyone t-shirts of bright purple, fluorescent yellow, or some other “get your attention” color. As I sat in the airport people-watching between flights, I saw several of these ultra-safe, ultra-coordinated families moving their way through the crowds. I’ll give it to them, they sure did stand out.

And then I got to thinking . .  . why not take it a step further? Why just do matching jeans and t-shirts? I mean, the whole wear matching, brightly colored shirts, is so 1980’s. Everyone is doing it. And they are all doing the same thing. If you really want to stand out, you’re going to have to do something a bit different.

Red Afro WigHow about matching wigs? Your group would be so easy to spot in a crowd if you were all wearing  . . . red afro wigs.

Head toppings are easy, so pick out a crazy hat – of course, make it something bright and outlandish. Your family will be safe, secure, together and having fun all at the same time.

Got a favorite sports team? Have everyone wear that team’s jersey.

Going somewhere cold? How about matching costumes. Something to keep you warm and easy to identify.

How about a family of Teletubbies?

Have everyone dress as a Hogwarts’ student with a nice robe and scarf.

Or a family of superheroes? Okay, maybe that’s going a bit far (or maybe not), but you get the idea. If you are going to wear matching clothes, have some fun with it. And, on top of all that, you’ll  have the perfect set of coordinated outfits to use for your next set of family portraits or Christmas cards. Talk about efficient!
