Costume Countdown Day 31: Going to the Dogs

October 31st, 2009

The end is here! 31 days of showcasing costumes. 31 days of counting down to Halloween. 31 days of men’s costumes, women’s costumes, do-it-yourself costumes, costumes for kids, and costumes for teens. So why not end it all with one type of costume we haven’t shown yet.

Fluffy Bunny Dog Costume

DOGGY COSTUMES!

My friend’s dog, Sasha, was an excited volunteer for this Fluffy Bunny doggy costume. Can’t you just see it in his eyes? He’s loving it.

Dress your pup up and take him or her out for some trick-or-treating fun.

Seen and Heard at Fiesta

August 10th, 2009

Ready for Fiesta

I slapped on my handy, dandy sombrero and headed downtown to watch the Santa Barbara Fiesta Parade on Friday.

fiesta-flower-girls

First up: the cute Fiesta flower girls all dolled up in their homemade outfits, tossing flowers into the crowd. One girl seemed to think she was trying out for the Dodgers or something. There was the wind up quickly followed by her best flower fast ball. She pelted my sombrero with one pretty good.

fiesta-flower-girls-3I asked one of the girls what Viva la Fiesta meant – since that is what they kept yelling out every 10 steps, with all the gusto of a drunken party-goer. She just shrugged, rolled her eyes, and explained rather seriously that she was just told to say it.

Pedro the Burro was not nearly as cooperative or enthusiastic about the parade. He seemed determined to walk only with the big horses. He was digging in his heels, and resisting his owner’s attempts to drag him down the street until his taller, statelier, more majestic cousins approached. Once the big horses caught up to him, he fell right in line with them. I think he thought that was his rightful place.

I heard a native Santa Barbarian say, “Wow, there sure are a lot of horses in this parade.” Apparently you can live in this town for years and be entirely clueless that this is one of the biggest equestrian parades in the state.

Having a blast

Fiesta parade riderHorses, horses and more horses. They were ridden bythe young,  the old , the older still, by men, by women, all with  riders in costume and looking quite fabulous. We had horses pulling carts, horses dancing, horses being ridden, high steppers, and search and rescue workers, and I even heard that one horse threw its rider and went solo for a bit.

Mariachis in Parade

Between all of the horses there were bands. Of course, the  marching mariachis had the best look. But here’s the odd thing. One of the marching bands from Oxnard made no effort whatsoever to look the part. They showed up in standard marching band apparel.

They should have followed the example of Santa Barbara High School’s marching band and dressed with a bit of Fiesta Flavor. I mean, really how hard is it? You throw on some black pants, a white shirt, and tie a red sash around your waist and presto-magico, you look all Fiesta-ish. Heck if you add a black hat, a cowboy hat or sombrero you are really going all out.

Romero on a Siesta at Fiesta

After a few hours in the sun, watching all the horses, we headed home only to find our pup enjoying Fiesta in his own way — taking a siesta!

The First Dog has Been Chosen… Now about the Costume

February 27th, 2009

According to the headlines, Obama and his family have chosen their dog.  I hadn’t even seen a Portuguese Water Dog before, so here’s a pic for people like me.

I'm cute, but I need a Costume!

I'm cute, but I need a Costume!

While their dog is a puppy, they will have lots of options for dressing up the pooch.  As the dog grows older, however, he or she may not be too keen on it.  Of ccourse, we hope the Obama family brings their dog to Santa Barbara for the annual Big Dog Parade held every year, but we know that has about a one in a 3trillion chance of happening.

Check out the Dog Costumes we have and vote on which one you think might be best for the new First Pooch.

Holidays from Your Pets Point of View

December 21st, 2008
The holidays? Oh, yeah, I love the holidays. My person brings a tree in the house, which is weird because when I bring stuff in from outside, I get in trouble. Anyway, I love the tree. I sniff it and, when she’s not looking, I pee on it – don’t tell her that part. I don’t understand all of the traditions of Christmas, but I like the one where she puts a water bowl under the tree for me. Very tasty. I like all the extra yummy foods too. I sort of help out with the cooking. It’s my job to look for falling crumbs or drops. But my favorite part of the holidays are the fun outfits I get to wear. I’m sort of a skinny girl, and I get a bit chilly in the winter. I just love my warm and, in case you didn’t notice, very sexy, Santa Paws outfit. It keeps me all cozy. And I am the best dressed dog on the block, if I don’t say so myself.
The holidays? You must be kidding. Bah-humbug, the whole thing is a waste of time, if you ask me. That freaky little dog gets all excited and bounces around non-stop. Why can’t she just settle down and act mature like me? Okay, I’ll admit it, there are two things I like about Christmas. I always get a special can of cat food. That is something I look forward to all year. And I get to look all intimidating in this hat. I pretend not to like it, but I do. I look pretty good huh?

Adorable Dog Costumes

September 22nd, 2008

It’s been a busy week, but we have just received the cutest dog costumes! My sister brought in her dog, Lily to try on costumes this week and check her out in the Froggy Doggy Costume. This costume tends to run a little big because Lil could have fit in the next size down and she’s… well, shall we say a little on the beefy side for her breed.

Here she is showing off her new costume…
