Santa Fusion

December 12th, 2009

NBC New York reports that the global phenomenon that is Santacon is descending upon New York City, and other locations, today – Saturday December12th.

Since anyone and everyone is welcome to join in the mayhem, NBC was kind enough to remind all potential Santaconners of the three basic rules of all Santacon events. The first and most important of which, and the only one I’m going to talk about,  . . .

Rule No. 1: Dressing up is mandatory. And that doesn’t mean phoning it in with a red hat. You need to go full Santa. Creativity is encouraged.

Of course it’s perfectly acceptable to arrive, dressed in classic Santa attire, but it’s so much more fun to add a sprinkle of creativity, a dash of uniqueness, and a big old heaping serving of weird to your look.

Santa Fusion is a good place to start. Fusion happens when we take one costume and mash it together with another, creating something really fun. Here are few Santa Fusion ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

santa-elvis

Santa Elvis –  Wear an Elvis wig, along with a Santa suit all tailored out ( keep those pants bottoms wide) and a sequined red cape.

disco-santa

Disco Santa – How about a nice white afro to start? Don’t know why that guy in the photo didn’t think of that. Then either wear red bell bottoms, and a red sequined disco shirt, with some white marabou fluff added or wear a Santa Suit unbuttoned to the navel with the Santa pants tailored to give you that flared disco look. Add some big flashy glasses, shiny necklaces, a Santa hat, and platform shoes and you’re good to go. Girls, if you are doing your own Disco Santa look, we’ve got a ton of great Santa costumes for you and some gloves that it would be a crime not to wear.

Stripper Santa – I got this idea watching Ellen. Wear the Santa pants and hat from the classic Santa suit. No shirt for you though. You are going bare-chested with only white bow tie and cuffs. Even Ellen’s Hunky Santa’s didn’t think of that!

gangster santa

Gangster Santa – Red pinstriped pants, Santa’s jacket, along with a tommy gun, classic Santa wig and beard, topped off with a red fedora with a white band

grinch-santa

Grinch Santa – Take that classic Santa suit, wear only the jacket, add some green tights, and red elf shoes. Then add some green face paint or buy the full-on Grinch mask. Some green gloves with long spindly fingers would be a nice touch as well.

Darth_Claus

Darth Claus – Jump into your handy-dandy Darth Vader costume, add one red cape, preferably something velour or befitting the North Pole. Add some fluff at the cuffs, a nice Santa beard, and maybe even candy cane striped light saber.

pirate_santa

Pirate Santa – Santa and Pirates fuse really well. For the simplest approach, start with a classic Santa suit, add pirate boots, stick a pirate sword in your belt, a great pirate hat, either Santa’s beard and wig or a black pirate wig and beard. Top it off with a hook or an eye patch.

candy cane mohawksantaclausmohawk

Punk Santa – If you’ve already got, or are willing to get a Mohawk, just bleach it white. Add some big black biker or combat boots and some spikes and studs around your neck and wrist to the classic Santa suit. Wearing the Santa beard is totally optional. The candy cane Mohawk is a whole other project that I wish you much luck on.

super santa in whiteSuperSanta

Super Santa – There are so many directions to go with this one. Just remember this: real superheroes wear tights and always wear their underwear on top. I’d go with red spandex tights and top, candy cane bottoms/underwear, a black Santa belt, a red or green cape, a Santa hat of almost any variety, and either black boots, Santa GoGo Boots or maybe I’d use the Wonder Woman boots to give it the total superhero feel.

Santacon events happen all over the place, all through the month of December. Keep your eyes open and get involved. Be creative and try a little Santa Fusion.

Costume Countdown Day 24: Insta-Soldier

October 24th, 2009

Roman Soldier CostumeHere was the plan: be a hippie. I had my clothes picked out – my jeans, my long sleeved tie-dye shirt, my sandals, along with my hippie wig, John Lennon glasses, headband, and big peace necklace. Only one problem . . . the weather. The temps jumped yesterday to the upper 70s and my planned costume for work was no longer so groovy.

What could I come up with QUICKLY that would be a comfy, functional and very cool costume??? I love the Roman Soldier helmet that we carry and had been meaning to make a whole costume to go with it, so I went with one of Scavenge’s handy-dandy costume kits.

The Roman Soldier kit comes with a gold lamé helmet and collar, a gold rope belt, and faux leather cuffs. All I needed was the toga. I headed off to the thrift store where I intended to by a sheet that I could make into a toga. I discovered that a nice large women’s nightgown would cost me less money. So I walked out with a white nightgown for $2.99.

At home I cut off the sleeves and the bottom 4 inches of the nightgown. It was a tad see-through, so I used a red sash as my belt instead of the gold rope belt provided in the kit. That kept me from being too showy in the front. The back was fine because when I tied the sash around my waist, the “toga” gathered in the back.

I wore some tan flip flops that could have been made better if only I had time to get some leather to make them look like Roman sandals . I could have bought some costume Roman Sandals, but they were just too big for my teeny feet. In the end, I was pretty happy with my look and totally thrilled with how easy this was and how cool I felt at work.

And the moral of the story is: check the weather when planning your costume. What’s the forecast for Halloween night in your neck of the woods????

Costume Countdown Day 23: Tweaking Cinderella

October 23rd, 2009

Any costume can be tweaked, fine-tuned, or played with to create a look that is uniquely YOU.Cinderella Costume In fact, in my admittedly expert opinion, not only can every costume be tweaked, every costume should be tweaked. What would be the point of just pulling a costume out of its bag, slapping in on and heading out to a Halloween party? If you do that, you run a huge risk of running into the other “Cinderellas” out there who did the same thing.

Now, if this were the King’s Ball you were attending, hoping to find your very own Prince Charming, you wouldn’t dare risk being just one of many Cinderellas, all dressed the same. You’d find a way to make your look a bit different, to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

Whitney has done just that with our Sexy Cinderella Costume. The costume actually has a lace up crop top and a skirt, with the designers intending Cinderella to have the belly exposed.

Whitney said no thanks to that and added a snug white tank. When I saw her, I actually thought the costume was supposed to be that way – it looked so good. This tweaking takes a bit of the sexiness off the costume and sends it just a bit more over to the playful side.

Whitney also toned down the sexified look by going with knee socks and tennies instead of the fishnet stockings and clear high heels worn by the model. The final Cinderella tweakage was with the hair. Whitney put on a long, blond wig, and did some pulling it up back, tucking, and pinning to get this look.

Pretty stinken’ cute look she’s got going there. Very fun, very playful, very distinctive. Now that you’ve seen what a little tweaking can do for Cinderella, it’s time for you to get out there and tweak your own costume and make it uniquely YOU!

Costume Countdown Day 13: Scavenge Sheriff

October 13th, 2009

Let me introduce you to our own personal law enforcement officer over here at Scavenge.Sheriff Costume Whitney, a face you are sure to see if you visit our store in Santa Barbara, is always eager to dress up in costume. Today she’s the Sheriff of Scavenge, keeping the peace, enforcing the law, and handing out tickets to  any who dare to ignore the rules.

Sheriff Whitney gave the costume a more playful look, adding a belt, Converse tennis, and black socks. You could add some fishnet stockings and black boots with this costume to sexify the sheriff look. Whatever direction you go, this costume gives you a cute, comfortable, flattering base to build from or use as is.

The Costume Countdown Begins

October 1st, 2009

Alice in WonderlandWelcome to October – the month with the most fun, most exciting, most creative holiday of the year. Halloween is now only 30 days away and to celebrate the wonderful looks of Halloween, we’ll be counting down to the big day by showcasing a new costume every single day. All the photos you’ll see over these next 31 days are of average people, just like you. Not the manufacturers models and without any touching up. These are friends and others we’ve tricked, fooled, and blackmailed into showing off some of our favorite costumes.

Today, let me introduce you to that brave girl who is always up for a trip down the rabbit hole, a tea party with the Mad Hatter and crew, or a croquet match with the Queen of Hearts. It’s Alice in Wonderland. We’ve added a black petticoat, fairy tale shoes, and the most awesome wig I’ve seen in months. It’s called the Naughty Girl wig, but please don’t tell Alice that.  She wouldn’t approve of its name.

Have some fun this Halloween as sweet, curious, fun-loving Alice. Don’t pack it too far away. You can always use the costume again for any adventures in Wonderland you may have planned, a play, or to re-capture your childhood spirit after a rough day/week at work!

Sexy Clubwear and Stilettos for your Spring Cruise

March 15th, 2009
Ok, now that you have chosen your swimwear it is time to consider your clubwear and the pumps and high heels to match. For late nite Disco Fun, I would recommend the staple sexy black mini dress paired with some awe inspiring leg enhancing high  heels. If the color red is your thing a slinky red mini dress will do the trick just right. Oh and how about a pair of rhinestone sandals for that extra rich flair.

Secrets of my Superhero Costume

March 10th, 2009

I’m going to take a risk here and share some highly classified, top secret, and personal information. I trust that you will not let this slip into the wrong hands. The fate of the world, as we know it, hangs in the balance.

fitnatic-dancing1I am a superhero. I have an hidden identity, a full-on  superhero costume, and a superhero name. Yep, I’m the real deal. And I am now going to share with you how I made my superhero costume. I’m sorry I can not reveal my superhero hideaway or my superhero weakness, that would be going too far and could put my mission on planet Earth in jeopardy. I am only sharing this confidential information about my superhero costume, because you may need it someday. Maybe deep down inside you know you are a superhero and haven’t been using your powers to better humanity merely because you lacked the proper outfit. Or, of even more importance, you may have been invited to a Superhero Theme Party where you have to create and dress as your own personal superhero. So here’s how I created my costume.

I already happened to own these cool superhero boots, so I decided to build the rest of my superhero costume around them. I chose to use a yellow and red color scheme.

Imagine the possible superhero costume you could make with these.

Imagine the possible superhero costume you could make with these.

I happen to be a fan of tights, spandex, and wearing my undies on the outside, so I went with the classic superhero look. I chose to go with a long sleeved unitard from We Love Colors, but you could also go with tights and leotard, tights and a t-shirt, or nothing on top like Nacho Libre.

If you choose the latter, I just hope you’ve got a more appealing torso than Jack Black (sorry, Jack).

I looked around for the perfect pair of red undies, but struck out. So I bought red bikini bottoms instead. I ended up loving the look and the fit. I loved them so much, I went back and bought the bikini top to match.

Unlike the Incredibles, I don’t have an aversion to capes. In fact, I totally dig them. I knew I absolutely had to have a cape as part of my costume, even though flying is not one of my superpowers. Capes are just plain cool and add a mystical, intriguing touch. The problem is it’s really hard to find superhero capes for sale.

I bought a long, red costume cape and had a friend alter it to suit my superhero needs. Perfect!

My superhero name is Fitnatic. I’m dedicated to health, fitness, and getting people active. I wanted a big F on my chest to make my superhero costume memorable. I bought a sheet of felt with a peel off adhesive backing. I made a pattern, cut out the F, and attached to my chest.

For the final touch, I used red clown makeup to paint a mask on my face. I’ve tried wearing masks, but they have several inherent problems. The first of which is the constant urge fans and arch enemies have to pull masks off, revealing your identity. Secondly, masks  tend to restrict your peripheral vision, which is a real problem for superheroes. Finally, it gets hot in a mask. Painting the mask onto my face has solved all of these problems.

Use this information wisely and protect it with your life. I’m trusting that my secret is safe with you. If, by chance, you reveal this information to evildoers, don’t be surprised if I suddenly appear with a set of dumbbells and a list of grueling exercises for you to perform.

Roma Boots by Leg Avenue Shoes on Bones!

February 21st, 2009

Ok, I love murder mystery shows. I was catching up watching my DVR recording of the show Bones on Fox and what did I see? The victim was apparently wearing those super cute gladiator boots called Roma by Leg Avenue Shoes.
